Artifice

A tome that poses a collection of objects as potential replacements for bodily systems and invites the reader to contribute to the book by selecting an item for themselves. The book's contents also take the form of a life sized nervous system poster that shows all of the objects in relation to the position they would replace on the body.

To become weathered and desired.

The concept for this book began with the creation of a text-hybrid piece and author's note which set up the idea of replacing aspects of the human body with odd unique objects. The next step of the process was to select, organize, and photograph the collection of items that were to be featured within the book. Once I defined which items were in the book, I selected the majority of the objects and began to choose which bodily systems each would replace. With these objects, I began to write the entries that describe the magical capabilities imbued within each item. The writing was inspired by Shakespearean prose and descriptions found in video games like Elden Ring or Bloodborne drawing forward that essence of fantasy into these real items. The final component of the book is in the collaborative interaction element of red "interjection" cards, where readers are prompted to select an item, write why they selected such, and place the card back into the spiral binding. The decision to integrate such interaction came from the choice to reverse the traditional method of gathering entries for a collaborative book by gathering these entries after the book's creation. For the people that wrote an interjection for the book, I gave them a printed temporary tattoo which depicted the item they chose.
