The Midnight Motel

A sculpture made with the intent of provoking curiosity and delight through the creation of an unusual scene that makes use of both a 3d build and 2d projected surfaces. In this scene there is a motel in which the monsters of the world have gone to for a much needed vacation.

Hot fun in the summertime.

The idea for this piece came first with music. As the spring clouds parted to make way for the blazing California summer, I made the decision to create a new playlist of 60s-70s funk, a little bit of reggae, some oldies, and a sprinkle of jazz fusion. With the intention set to make something that incorporated both modeling and projection, the playlist painted a picture in my head of a humble vacation spot where all number of colorful characters would manifest. Through the process making this piece I got the opportunity to play in material, drawing the monstrous characters with sharpie and crayon and fabricating the motel from wood and texturing it with paint manipulated with the addition of sawdust or by the application with a dry paper towel. Through this experimentation I sought to replicate materiality on a miniature scale which exercised my eye for fabrication and detail.
